Fish Sampling and Identification

StreamTechs specializes in the collection and identification of freshwater fishes. We are skilled in identifying all North American freshwater species for all families, with more thorough expertise in the eastern states (east of the Rocky mountains). Fishes are identified to species for all families.

Identification of specimens is done by Kevin Barnes, M.S. Kevin received his training at the University of Georgia under the guidance of Dr. Byron Freeman, a leading ichthyologist in the southeastern U.S.; a region with the highest diversity of temperate freshwater fishes in the world. Kevin has more than 25 years of experience in fish taxonomy and has passed the Maryland Biological Stream Survey taxonomy exam.

We are skilled in all currently used practices of fish collection, including backpack electro-shocking, boat shocking, seining, angling, trapping and a variety of other techniques.

StreamTechs is committed to providing high quality taxonomic services and assessment reports. We attend national meetings in the field of aquatic science, participate in taxonomic workshops, and keep up with current scientific literature. We have a large reference collection of over 150 fish species used for taxonomic purposes.

Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) reports are often the final products which clients are looking for from StreamTechs. Biological indices vary from region to region, therefore every project is unique and findings may vary depending on the type of data collected. We are committed to bringing clients the highest quality work possible and completing projects in a timely manner and at an affordable cost.
